The biggest night in television turned out to be an even bigger night for Chicago as Windy-City-based series “The Bear” took home a historic 11 Emmys Sunday night.
The hit show broke the record for most Emmys received by a comedy series, winning seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmys and four at the main Emmy Awards on Sunday evening, according to a statement from the Television Academy.
Jeremy Allen White received the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy, for his role as show protagonist Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto.
White’s co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, while fellow cast member Liza Colón-Zayas won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Director Christopher Storer took home The Bear’s fourth Emmy of the night, winning Outstanding Directing for a Comedy.
Set along the streets of Chicago, The Bear follows the wacky antics of Chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto and crew as they work to turn around his family’s struggling Italian Beef shop.
The show has gained a dedicated following for its hard-hitting storylines, emotional performances, and humorously raw portrayal of the Chicago restaurant industry. The show also pays tribute to Chicago’s rich history with depictions of beloved local landmarks and businesses.
The Bear’s categorization as a comedy at the Emmys sparked a heated debate online, as some fans and critics have argued the series is more of a drama. Some critics have even likened the show’s comedy wins to category fraud.
Nonetheless, The Bear has captured the views and hearts of millions of viewers, as reflected by its historic Emmys run. The show’s third season debuted earlier this summer, with a fourth season rumored to premiere sometime next year.
