The sky lanterns, made using rice paper (which is fire-resistant), string, and bamboo, are eco-friendly and made using 100% biodegradable materials. The festival also employs a cleanup crew to collect the lanterns upon landing.
There are multiple lantern styles and sizes, each of which has a different burn time. The event organizers will select the perfect lantern style for the Chicago event. This is usually based on the chosen venue and weather conditions that night.
