Chicago’s oldest steakhouse, Gene & Georgetti, holds a special place in the hearts of Chicagoans. Established in 1941 by two Italian men who rose from humble beginnings, it has remained family-owned even after all these decades.
This year is particularly significant for Gene & Georgetti as they celebrate their 85th anniversary. The restaurant is a cornerstone of Chicago’s culinary scene, and the legacy of both Gene & Georgetti is honored and celebrated within three generations of Gene’s family, the most recent being his granddaughter Michelle and grandson-in-law, Collin.
While it holds the distinction of being the city’s original Tuscan steakhouse, the restaurant is a cherished institution for its familial atmosphere.
For its 85th anniversary, a special street dedication will be held in honor of Anthony A. Durpetti, who passed away last year. Anthony Durpetti, along with his wife, Marion, took over Gene & Georgetti after the death of his father-in-law, Gene Michelotti.
Now, with their daughter Michelle at the helm, the restaurant continues to uphold its Italian roots while incorporating a modern flair, ensuring it remains a beloved fixture in Chicago’s food scene.
What to order from Gene & Georgetti
The Original Garbage Salad
It’s no wonder it’s a staple—they invented it! The dish has everything: shrimp, salami, olives, cheese, and tomato. It’s a larger appetizer that’s perfect for sharing.
Baked Calms
We can’t talk enough about these clams… they are manilla clams stuffed with garlic-breadcrumb mixture. Our mouths are still watering just thinking about them.
Spaghetti Cacio e Pepei
It’s hard to mess this classic dish up, but they do it exceptionally well.
Steaks & Chops
At this Tuscan steakhouse, steaks and chops are the obvious stars of the show. Any will work, so pick your favorite!
Eggplant Parmigiana
Made the old school way with generous portions of chicken and Parmesan. Need we say more?
