Your morning coffee and late night snack runs just got a lot easier! Foxtrot will reopen several of its Chicago locations, months after the convenience grocer filed for bankruptcy and shuttered stores nationwide.
According to Eater Chicago, multiple former Foxtrot locations have applied for liquor licenses, signaling a citywide comeback. The Gold Coast location reopened on Thursday, September 5, according to multiple reports, and locations in Wicker Park, Old Town, and Fulton Market are slated to follow.
On April 23 of this year, Foxtrot’s parent company, Outfox Hospitality filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and abruptly closed its 33 national Foxtrot locations. The move came as a shock to employees, patrons, and vendors, many of whom received little notice.
Additionally, Outfox Hospitality owned Dom’s Kitchen and Market, an artisanal grocery with in Old Town and Lincoln Park. Both Dom’s locations ceased all operations following the bankruptcy filing.
Following the closure, Outfox Hospitality released an apology stating, “We explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option despite good faith and exhaustive efforts.”
Since then, Foxtrot founder Mike LaVitiola has assumed leadership of the company, according to Eater. The convenience chain has reportedly joined forces with investment firm Further Point Enterprises. Under its new ownership, Foxtrot reportedly plans to reopen 15 stores total, with the majority in Chicago and Texas, according to Eater.
For now, there are no plans to reopen Dom’s Kitchen and Market. Organic grocery chain The Fresh Market plans to take over the former Lincoln Park location this fall, according to reports.
All in all, Foxtrot’s return is a win for Chicagoans who enjoyed its specialty grocery selection, espresso bar, and other offerings.
According to ABC7, customers can expect new coffee and food menu items at the reopened stores. Additional locations will reopen through the end of 2024 and into 2025.
