Local legend Chonkosaurus the turtle has made her first appearance of 2025—unofficially ushering in the start of summer.
The Legend of Chonkosaurus
First reported by the Chicago Tribune, the famously plump snapping turtle was recently photographed by a Shedd Aquarium employee lounging along the Chicago River, looking as majestic as ever.
Chonkosaurus first captured hearts (and the internet) after photos of her went viral on social media in 2023. Her round frame and chill vibes quickly earned her an affectionate nickname and a loyal fanbase.
Most recently, the beloved reptile was spotted near Goose Island—a documented hangout for riverbank turtles, according to the Tribune.
So the next time you’re kayaking, biking the Riverwalk, or just soaking in the sun downtown, keep your eyes peeled. You just might catch a glimpse of Chicago’s favorite shelled sweetheart.
