Pokémon fans in Chicago have a reason to be excited—a Pokémon-themed exhibit is coming to the Field Museum in 2026!
Beloved video game characters meet real-life fossils
The traveling Japanese special exhibition Pokémon Fossil Museum will make its U.S. debut at the Field Museum on May 22, 2026. This immersive experience draws connections between fossil-inspired Pokémon and the real prehistoric creatures that inspired them.
The exhibit focuses specifically on fossil Pokémon—characters in the game brought to life from ancient remains. By linking these creatures to real-life dinosaurs and extinct animals, the exhibition aims to spark curiosity and introduce visitors to the wonders of paleontology.
Guided by “Professor Fossil,” “Excavator Pikachu,” and Field Museum scientists, guests will journey through colorful displays and scientifically accurate fossil replicas that blend pop culture with natural history.
Pokémon Fossil Museum: A fun-filled experience rooted in science
“The fact that Pokémon is rooted in real science is not something that most of us think about,” said Jaap Hoogstraten, Head of Exhibitions at the Field Museum.
“By forefronting that aspect of the story, we hope that Pokémon Fossil Museum will be a pathway to science for our visitors—especially budding paleontologists.”
Whether you’re a lifelong Pokémon fan or just curious, this one-of-a-kind exhibit offers something for all ages, combining nostalgia, education, and hands-on discovery.
