Chicago experienced major tourism growth in 2024, Choose Chicago revealed at its annual meeting last week.
The Windy City welcomed an estimated 55.3 million visitors last year, according to a release, representing a 6.5% increase compared to 2023 and generating $20.6 billion in overall economic impact.
International tourism, conventions, and major events spur growth
Chicago saw international tourism growth on par with its pre-pandemic numbers in 2024, surpassing 2 million global visitors for the first time since 2019.
Additionally, the city experienced reinforced commitment from major conventions like the National Restaurant Association Show, which will take place here through 2032. In total, conventions accounted for $3 billion in local revenue for 2024.
The Windy City saw additional gains from major events like the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, Lollapalooza, and Sueños, all of which will return this summer.
City leaders celebrate big wins
Mayor Brandon Johnson praised the momentum during Choose Chicago’s 2025 meeting, highlighting the tourism sector’s role in Chicago’s economic recovery and long-term vitality.
“Chicago is a city that knows how to host,” said Johnson. “The numbers released today show that the future of our tourism industry is bright…I am confident that tourism will continue to serve as a cornerstone of our economy, generating critical tax revenues and supporting thousands of good-paying jobs if we continue to work together.”
Kristen Reynolds, President & CEO of Choose Chicago, also celebrated Chicago’s success in a statement. “…we have much to celebrate, with so many world-class events coming to Chicago this summer…and even the first American Pope hailing from Chicago.“
