Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen is practically engrained in Chicago history by now. The deli has been serving families, locals, and tourists for decades. While we’ve already known about its standout status, including its incredible traditional food, charming set-up, and friendly staff, Mashed.com, recently named it one of the best delis in the US, hereby cementing its iconic standing.
Mashed writes about the secret to a successful delicatessen, saying the key to Manny’s success, “is not to change a thing”. They also note in the article, “Manny’s has grown to become one of the most well-loved delis in the city.”
Manny’s first opened in 1942 and hasn’t changed much since then. While they have moved locations once, that’s about it– it’s owned by the same family that started out, and still use the same customer-favorite recipes, from corned beef, pastrami, matzo-ball soup, and more. It still boasts cafeteria-style tables, a black and white tiled floor and the typical delicatessen fare of course.
While it’s popular with locals, it has also served a bevy of famous faces and politicians, from Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, to former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and current Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, among others.
Manny’s has faced its own hardships, especially during the pandemic. In July of 2020, they posted a plea on social media, asking for support and takeout orders as the city-wide shutdown impacted their business. The call to action went viral, and orders came in in droves.
They’ve also given back to the community. In March 2021, they decided to give away free sandwiches to the first 1,000 masked customers.
Manny’s Deli is one of the best delis and mashed.com is right to say so.
