Meet the Brookfield Zoo’s newest friend—an rare axolotl.
Ax-o what l?
Axolotls (pronounced axo-lot-l) are a type of endangered amphibious salamander native to the canals of Xochimilco in Mexico City.
The critters are known for their unique external gills, cartoon-like faces, and whimsical appearance.
The adorable amphibian arrived at the zoo this spring after being confiscated by officials at O’Hare airport, according to multiple reports.

The creature is reportedly thriving in its new environment, but is still missing one necessity—a name. The Brookfield Zoo has released several name options that Chicagoans can vote for on the zoo’s Facebook page:
- Poseidon
- Sir Mix-o-lotl
- Bubblegum
- Mochi
