The village of Westmont, IL just broke a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Fruit Display with 70,000 pounds of bananas!
The Banana Bonanza is now on display outside Jewel-Osco at 4 East Ogden Ave. It has officially been awarded the largest fruit display with a Guinness representative stopping by the store to verify the claim. Bananas are Jewel-Osco’s top selling item in the store! The produce departments stocks more than 140,000 pounds of bananas a day. This display was done in partnership with Fresh Del Monte, a leading fruit and veggie producer and distributer, in celebration of National Fruit and Vegetable Month.
A lot of time and energy went into creating the display over a three days period with the massive endeavor holding thousands of bananas (It included approximately 211,200 bananas!) Constructed entirely of Del Monte bananas, the entire display measured 118 feet wide and 11 feet high and weighed exactly 77,365.9 pounds.
It’s certainly a sight to behold, as attendees gathered around the display at 10:30 AM today. At the event, people were given free bananas, with plans for the rest of the display to go to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
The largest display of fruit was previously awarded to Sunkist Growers and Rouses Markets in Metairie, Louisiana. FYI: It’s a 38 minute drive to Westmont from Chicago. See the banana bonanza for yourself before the display is gone!
