For all of Chicago’s wonderful summer experiences, living in such a thriving metropolis means that we’re also known to throw a few curveballs when it comes to the city’s busy summer events calendar.
Later this month, one such large-scale leftfield event returns for its 20th anniversary in the form of the famous bare-as-you-dare World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR).
Taking place on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, the 20th annual World Naked Bike Ride in Chicago once again celebrates “freedom from oil, and the beauty of people” while highlighting “the vulnerability of cyclists everywhere”.
“Even when clothed we cyclists are virtually naked exposed to the dangers and pollution imposed by cars” reads the WNBR Chicago event page. “By cycling naked we show our confidence in the beauty and individuality of our bodies and the bicycle’s place as a catalyst for change to a future of ecologically responsible transport and healthy and humane communities.”
“It’s only natural that people-powered transport is the way to a truly sustainable future. Unless we change direction, we are likely to end up where we are heading” it concludes.
The clothing-optional people-powered event invites people to get involved by wearing anything from body paint to underwear to fanciful costumes, though it emphasizes that “due to legal restrictions” full frontal nudity, which is often seen at WNBR events, is at the individual’s own risk.
Thousands of riders have joined previous World Naked Bike Ride events in Chicago which has grown year to year and now culminates in a huge afterparty.
This year cyclists and skaters can meet at The Cubby Bear Chicago at 1059 W Addison St anytime to check in between 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 29th before riders leave at 8 p.m.
The four-hour, 14-mile bike ride is rain or shine and will end around 11:30 p.m.
There will be Bike Marshalls in yellow vests helping guide mass riders safely.
More information can be found at chicagonakedride.org As with previous years, exact details regarding the route and other important will be released the day before.
