The REAL ID deadline is May 7, 2025—meaning starting today U.S. citizens will need the updated, secure form of identification to fly domestically or access certain federal buildings.
With lines wrapping around the block at Chicago’s REAL ID Supercenter and DMVs across Illinois overwhelmed by demand, there’s a good chance you didn’t get your new ID before the deadline.
Luckily, there’s no need to panic—several alternative forms of ID are still accepted by airport security, and even if you don’t have one, there are other options.
Here’s what to do if you missed the REAL ID deadline.
Pack Your Passport
Bringing your passport on a flight from Chicago to L.A. might’ve felt a little over-the-top before May 7—but did you know it’s REAL ID compliant?
That’s right—if you have a valid U.S. passport, you’re already covered and don’t need to update your license. Just don’t forget to pack that little blue book in your carry-on.
The TSA also accepts several other forms of identification, including permanent resident cards and DHS trusted traveler cards. Click here for the full list of acceptable IDs.
What If I Don’t Have a Passport or Other Form of ID?
If you don’t have a REAL ID, valid passport, or other form of accepted ID, TSA will require an additional screening process to confirm your identity.
This process involves providing personal information—like your full name and home address—so TSA can verify your identity through other means. Once approved, TSA will permit you to pass through security, but you may face additional screening.
Note: TSA will not permit travelers to board if they refuse to present any form of acceptable ID or do not cooperate with the verification process.
How to Get Your REAL ID Fast
If you don’t have a passport or alternate ID, you’ll need to act fast to get your REAL ID.
A walk-in-only REAL ID Supercenter is now open in the Loop at 191 N. Clark St., where you can get your ID the same day. It’s open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
You’ll likely encounter long lines, so be sure to arrive early—and bring two forms of identification, like a birth certificate and Social Security card.

If you can’t make it downtown, Illinois DMVs have also expanded appointment availability to meet the high demand. Click here to schedule an appointment and learn more information.
