Flying out of Chicago this summer? You’ll need a new form of identification beginning next month!
On May 7, the US Government will begin enforcing the 2005 REAL ID Act. The act mandates that all U.S. citizens present a REAL ID-compliant license or other approved form of identification to board domestic flights.
But what exactly is a REAL ID? Does your current license meet requirements? Here’s everything you need to know before you head to the airport!
What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a form of federally issued identification that meets stricter security requirements than a standard license.
The IDs were created following the passage of the REAL ID Act in 2005, in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The law was initially intended to go into effect in 2008, but has been pushed back numerous times.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, REAL IDs are required in order to access federal facilities, enter nuclear power plants, and board federally regulated commercial flights.
How can I get a REAL ID?

Getting a REAL ID in Illinois mirrors the process of obtaining a standard ID. You’ll need to head to your nearest DMV location, have your photo taken, and complete any required exams.
Additionally, you will need two forms of ID to prove your identity, such as a US birth certificate or a US passport.
After completing the photo and application process, you’ll receive a temporary paper ID. Your permanent REAL ID will be issued by mail within 15 days.
Could my existing ID be REAL ID compliant?

There’s a chance that your current Illinois ID is already REAL ID compliant! Simply look at your license and check if there’s a gold star in the upper right hand corner.
If there’s a star, your ID is REAL ID compliant. If not, you’ll need to obtain a REAL ID compliant license or other accepted form of ID in order to fly.
What other forms of ID are compliant?

In lieu of a REAL ID compliant license, TSA will accept US passports as a valid form of identification for domestic flights.
