The third weekend of August in Southern Illinois brings something quite extraordinary: the Balloon Fest, an annual event in Centralia featuring over 30 hot air balloons taking flight. This is an experience that typically requires flying across the country or even to other countries to witness—yet, you don’t even need to leave the state.
Centralia’s balloon spectacle moves to Fairview Park this August
This year, the festival is moving to Fairview Park, marking one of the most significant changes in its long history. According to The Morning Sentinel, Foundation Park could no longer accommodate the growing event; the relocation to Fairview Park allows for a free community event, with complimentary parking thanks to a partnership with Fairview Park Plaza.
The weekend will feature evening flights, tethered rides, and the signature Balloon Glows, transforming the park into a dazzling landscape. Approximately 35 pilots will participate, bringing crowd favorites such as “Como Se Llama,” “Boo!,” and the Freedom Flight IV POW/MIA balloon.
Morning flights will launch from various locations across Centralia, with specific locations announced daily on the festival’s Facebook page. Please note that all balloon activities are weather-dependent to ensure the safety of pilots, crews, and guests.
Fairview Park’s existing amenities—including playgrounds, sports courts, an American Ninja Warrior-style course, horseshoes, volleyball, and a skatepark—will offer additional options for families to enjoy throughout the weekend.
On Sunday, the Free Family Fun Day will feature inflatables, games, Touch-A-Truck, miniature golf, and competitions throughout the park.
