Which institution comes to mind when you think of the best University? Harvard, Stanford, Princeton? Of course, these are excellent universities, but nowhere near here. However, according to a 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities, a Chicago institution has been named one of the best in the world: the University of Chicago.
Ranking 10th among world universities, the University of Chicago continues to prove that it’s an exceptional place to study—adding to Chicago’s accomplishments. Located in Hyde Park, the campus offers a rich student life experience in a big-city setting.
According to the study, the University ranked number one in Economics and Finance and high-ranking subjects in Law and Statistics.
The University has been home to 92 Nobel Prize winners, over 260 Guggenheim fellows, over 50 MacArthur “genius” fellows, and 25 Pulitzer Prize winners.
In terms of criteria, the experts ranked the schools based on “several academic or research performance indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, Highly Cited Researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.”
While being in the global top ten is impressive, the University of Chicago wasn’t the only American University to make it. Eight other American institutions ranked before the University of Chicago, including Harvard University, Stanford, and others.
