While it might sound odd, if you want ice cream at The Sugar Hole, you’re not going to order with a human. Instead, you have to place an order with a cowboy, a cow, or a polar bear.
The puppet-staffed ice cream window is officially reopening in Irving Park, bringing it back to the neighborhood.
Operating out of a circular portal, the puppets take cash, crack jokes, and goof around with each other while visitors wait for their desserts.
Located at the Color Club on Elston Avenue, the walk-up window keeps its offerings simple. The menu features vanilla, chocolate, and swirl soft-serve ice cream, available in cups or cones with sprinkles. Dairy-free pops are also available for those skipping milk.
After customers finish ordering from the puppet cast, human staff bring the ice cream out to the sidewalk. Visitors can then eat their treats at a small outdoor seating area bordered by planter boxes next to the street.
Weekend operations at The Sugar Hole
The window officially opens for the season starting Memorial Day weekend. Following the holiday, the characters at The Sugar Hole will be taking orders every Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the remainder of the summer.
