First opened in 1926, the Original Rainbow Cone is now getting a new Lombard location!
Chicago’s historic ice cream institution the Original Rainbow Cone has been a staple in Chicago since Joseph Sapp first opened the original South Side establishment in 1926. Dedicated to innovating one of his favorite childhood luxuries, Sapp’s Rainbow Cone grew and grew in popularity. A seasonal kiosk at Navy Pier followed but now, 95 years since it first opened, the Original Rainbow Cone is getting its second permanent brick & mortar location and an expanded fleet of ice cream trucks
The new store will open in Lombard on May 5 at 498 E. Roosevelt Road. With room for 50 people, it will be the company’s first indoor dining space and will also feature the company’s first drive-thru.
There will also be some exclusive specialty items only available at the Lombard location including mini donuts and Rainbow Mixers. Vegan sorbet flavors, milkshakes, and of course the world-famous 5-flavor combination of chocolate, strawberry, palmer house, pistachio, and orange sherbet will be available. A wide range of other signature ice cream flavors will include Black Walnut, Butter Pecan, New York Vanilla, Cookie Dough, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Bubble Gum, and Mint Flake.
The iconic Original Rainbow Cone’s pink and white polka dots will cover the Lombard exterior and an expansive patio will offer outdoor seating in addition to the indoor capacity capable of seating 50 patrons. Four new ice cream trucks will also be spreading rainbows across Chicago throughout the summer and one extra truck will be available for private events.
“We are excited to share our love for Rainbow Cone with even more communities. Rainbow Cone is not just about the cone, it’s about creating family memories that last a lifetime,” says Lynn Sapp, co-owner and Granddaughter of Rainbow Cone’s Founder.
To celebrate the grand opening on May 5, Rainbow Cone will host a social media giveaway via Instagram and Facebook. Three lucky winners will receive free ice cream for an entire year.
