Samosa chaat croissants, sesame blossoms lattes, and swadeshi masala chais are just a few of the Indian-inspired creations served at Swadesi Cafe, a coffee shop in the West Loop that has been on the scene for almost a year.
To celebrate its one-year anniversary, the charming Indian café is offering customers a free freshly brewed chai with the purchase of any menu item.
The café is led by Sujan Sarkar, a 2024 James Beard Award nominee, and pastry chef Yash Kishinchand. Sarkar also owns Chicago’s only Michelin-starred Indian restaurant, Indienne. Yet, instead of an extensive tasting menu, this café shop features a wide variety of affordable items that draw inspiration from India’s bustling food stalls.
The standout is the singular pastries. Swadesi exquisitely combines Indian roots with French pastry techniques, reminiscent of the bakery Kasama. Highlights include the samosa chaat croissant stuffed with spicy potatoes and a delightful hint of tart tamarind. Or the Malai Custard Croissant, where ras malai meets pistachio cream within buttery layers.
The beverage that draws everyone in is the freshly brewed masala chai, which will be free this Wednesday. Unlike the chai lattes found at most American coffee shops, the masala chai here is quite different.
The latte is made from a blend of loose tea leaves, rose, and spices—such as cinnamon, cardamom, fennel, and clove. These ingredients are brewed in milk for about an hour, then strained and served either sweetened or unsweetened.
If you want to wallow in a morning breakfast that combines traditional Indian flavors with modern twists, be sure to stop by Swadesi for delicious pastries and memorable morning beverages on your way to work.
