It might feel like we’ve only just entered winter, especially with the recent remorseless weather. Still, this weekend signals a change for the better — longer days and later sunsets!
Just over a month ago on Thursday, December 21, the sun rose at 7:14 am and set at 4:22 pm making the day length a grand total of 9 hours, 7 minutes, and 44 seconds, aka the shortest day of the year in Chicago.
This coming Sunday, however, the sun will begin setting at 5 pm once again and will continue to do so until fall.
On top of that, with a 7:07 a.m. sunrise, the day will be a total length of 9 hours, 52 minutes, and 50 seconds — almost an extra 45 minutes of daylight than a month ago — and from here on out it increases rapidly.
Next Thursday, the first day of February, we will then have our first 10-hour day with a sunrise at 07:03, a sunset at 17:05, and a total day length of 10 hours. one minute, and 44 seconds.
