Chicago’s affiliation with film and tv needs no introduction. From a range of popular filming locations to its many unique movie theatres and consistent new independent film festivals like February’s Crying at the Shed FilmFestival and last month’s Film Girl Film Festival, we live in a city that loves to celebrate the big screen.
Now Chicago has been chosen to host another new film festival, this time in collaboration with none other than the renowned Sundance Institute.
In partnership with Choose Chicago and the Chicago Film Office, the prestigious non-profit institute will present its first annual film festival in Chicago this month making it the first and only place in the United States to do so outside of Park City, Utah, the original home of the Sundance Film Festival.
Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024 will take place from Friday, June 28th through to Sunday, June 30th, and feature artist programs, film screenings, panel discussions, and other events across the city.
It will “champion creative independence” and feature a diverse range of screenings and programming, “including screening titles from the Sundance Film Festival,” say social media posts from Choose Chicago and the Sundance Institute.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson took to X, formerly Twitter, this week calling it “a momentous occasion for our city.”
“It not only celebrates our rich filmmaking heritage,” he said, “but also provides an unparalleled platform for our local talent to engage with industry leaders and decision-makers.”
Taking place in late June, Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024 will follow Filmscape Chicago the weekend before and the Independent Film Exhibition Conference which is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, June 25th until Friday, June 28th.
The inaugural Sundance Institute x Chicago schedule will include Midwest premiere screenings of four films drawn from the Sundance Film Festival’s lineup this past January.
“Luther: Never Too Much”, “Sugarcane”, “A Different Man” and “Your Monster” will be shown at the Logan Center for the Arts and the Davis Theater.
