What does a three-eyed dog and space travel have to do with West Town’s newest pizza spot? While the connection may not be immediately apparent (aside from the phrases displayed prominently on its website)—it relates to the unique names of the menu items, such as the Onion Eclipse, Mayan Time Traveler, and Moonwalk (1969).
Sharpie’s Pizza and Cocktails is the latest cosmic-themed restaurant specializing in Detroit-style pizza. It opened this week on Elston Avenue, catering to the overwhelming demand for more fast-casual dining near the Salt Shed.
The restaurant is the latest venture from co-owners Scott Koehl and Ryan Bair, who also operate Ada Street, located in the same neighborhood.
According to Block Club Chicago, the idea for Sharpie’s originated during the pandemic when the Ada Street team experimented with making focaccia for a nearby drive-in theater. This experimentation eventually led to their version of Detroit-style pizza, known for its caramelized crust and thick, airy dough.
The menu features tempting and indulgent dishes, including various Detroit-style pizzas topped with options like chicken mole and pickled onions or caramelized onions and melted cheese. With appetizers including wings, a blooming onion, and cheese curds.
For those who love to arrive early for concerts, Sharpie’s offers a pre-show snack option. And for those who might have enjoyed a drink or two, it serves as a perfect spot for a post-show bite after events at the Salt Shed.
