If you consider yourself a speeder—you might want to slow down. A new law in Illinois will require the installation of speed-limiting devices in vehicles driven by drivers who commit multiple traffic violations.
According to NBC Chicago, under the provisions of HB 4948, which Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law on Friday, the state will introduce the “Intelligent Speed Assistance Program,” designed to replace license suspension with an alternative for drivers.

Under the law, drivers who have committed two qualifying speeding or reckless driving offenses within 12 months must install a speed-limiting device in their vehicles. This device will prevent them from exceeding the speed limit.
Drivers would have up to 14 days after their second violation to obtain a permit for the device and have it installed.
The new driving restrictions will go into effect on January 1st, 2028
The new measure will take effect on January 1, 2028, and it passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly by wide margins. Virginia and Washington have already enacted similar laws, according to Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.
Participants in the program will be responsible for all costs associated with enrollment and participation, except for low-income residents, as stated in the legislation.
