If you have been scrolling through social media these past few months, you’ve likely come across “The Portal”—an open-air video link that connects two cities. It was first launched in New York City and then moved to Philadelphia. Well, now Chicagoans can get excited because The Portal is officially arriving in Chicago this April!
Originally known as the “New York–Dublin Portal,” this interactive art installation first connected New York City and Dublin, allowing people to interact through two live-streaming video screens that operate 24 hours a day.
Its creators’ dreams of meaningful connection and shared humanity were briefly halted in both NYC and Philly after incidents of misconduct forced both portals to shut down temporarily.

Despite that, the portal remains extremely popular and is set to move to Chicago this week. After its launch in October 2024, the Philadelphia Portal will transition to the Chicago Portal on April 4th. The new portal will feature a nearly 12-foot-tall structure, complete with an 8-foot-tall screen.
The spokesperson for Chicago’s Cultural Affairs and Special Events stated, “Communities across Dublin, Poland, and Lithuania will get to celebrate the city of Chicago. Gather in front of the Bean this Friday, April 4th, and make sure to check it out!”
Where will the Chicago Portal be located?
The Chicago portal will be right next to the Bean in Millennium Park!
Which cities will the Chicago Portal connect to?
Chicagoans will be able to see live feeds from Dublin, Poland, and Lithuania.
