Shoppers at Target and other retailers will soon face increased fees for single-use plastic and paper bags due to new regulations implemented by the town of Oak Park, Illinois.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the Oak Park Village Board voted last month to increase fees associated with single-use plastic and paper bags by 5 cents each year through 2029.
“15 cents for every single-use bag”: Oak Park approves mandatory checkout fee
Currently, the fee is 10 cents per bag. Starting January 1, customers shopping at Target will be charged 15 cents for each single-use bag they take. This fee will continue to increase by an additional 5 cents each year until 2029.

By 2030, Oak Park will completely ban single-use plastic bags, though customers will still have the option to purchase paper bags for 25 cents each.
It’s worth noting that individuals using SNAP, LINK, WIC, or other food assistance programs will be exempt from these charges.
