If you’re planning to watch fireworks over Lake Michigan on the 4th of July, we’ve got some disappointing news.
Despite being one of the largest cities in the U.S., Chicago will not have an official fireworks show on Friday, July 4. (Yes, you read that right.) However, this isn’t a new development; it has been the case for several years.
Navy Pier holds fireworks on July 4 only if it falls on a Wednesday or Saturday, as those are the designated days for their summer fireworks series. This year, since July 4th falls on a Friday, Navy Pier will hold their extended “Independence Celebration” show on Saturday, July 5, at 10 p.m., lasting 15 minutes instead of the usual 10.
So why are there no fireworks on the 4th of July?
According to the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the city stopped hosting its own official July 4 fireworks show downtown years ago.
If you still want your fireworks tonight on the 4th of July, here is a list of fireworks shows happening in the suburbs.
