Your daily downtown commute along the Metra is about to look a bit different—the Chicago transit organization is launching a pilot program that could curb free rides.
Here’s all the details.
Proof of ticket before you board
Metra’s new pilot program launches Monday, April 6, and will majorly change its ticketing process.
Traditionally, riders board their train before presenting their ticket to the conductor once seated.
Under the pilot program, however, Metra will require riders to present their digital or paper ticket to an employee before entering the train platform.

According to Metra, the goal of the program is to “test the speed, functionality, and durability of new handheld devices to scan Ventra and paper tickets.”
Metra will first test the program on off-peak trains, and may choose to expand the test to peak trains if things go smoothly.
