Rumors have swirled for months about the possibility of Metra reinstating café cars—now the transit organization has revealed a prototype for what the cars might look like.
The prototype reportedly features counters, stools, booths, tables, and some unique decorations to enhance ambiance.
Tour the café car and share your thoughts

Metra will introduce the prototype into service this fall, rotating the café car across its busiest lines, according to a release. The car will launch on the Rock Island Line from September 30 through October 2.
On Monday, October 6, Metra will dock the model at the LaSalle Street Station, allowing riders to tour the car and offer feedback in an onboard survey. Participants will also enjoy some free snacks and beverages.
From there, Metra will rotate the café car across the following lines and dates:
- BNSF Line – week of October 13
- Milwaukee District North Line – week of October 20
- Milwaukee District West Line – week of October 27
- Union Pacific North Line – week of November 3
- Union Pacific Northwest Line – week of November 10
- Union Pacific West Line – week of November 17
“We created this special car in an attempt to improve the riding experience and maybe attract new riders,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski.
“This is your chance to check it out and tell us what you think. Would you use it? What amenities would you like to see? What other thoughts do you have?”
