Starting next month your daily downtown commute might require a reroute.
The Chicago Department of Transportation will begin construction on the Lake Street Bascule Bridge on Monday, October 6.
The rehabilitation project will encompass various upgrades to ensure the longevity of the 109-year-old bridge which connects the West Loop to Chicago’s central business district.
Project timeline

CDOT expects the project to last until January 2028, during which time the bridge will close to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Green and Pink Line CTA service will continue largely uninterrupted during this period, with the exception of two designated service shutdowns in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
CDOT plans to release additional information as the planned service shutdowns approach.
In the meantime, CDOT has established two detour routes to accommodate drivers. Routes are as follows:
- Eastbound Lake Street: Desplaines Street to Washington Street to Franklin Street to Lake Street
- Westbound Lake Street: Wacker Drive to Madison Street to Jefferson Street to Lake Street
