Drive away as far as possible from this place…a list from HGTV named the creepiest places in every 50 states—and this Illinois spot made the list. So, if you’re a person infatuated with haunted places, the McPike Mansion will be for you.
Rooted in the town of Alton, Illinois, the historic mansion continues to loom over the city from its highest point, Mount Lookout Park. While Alton has a history of its own as one of the most haunted small towns in America, it’s the McPike Mansion that has made it notoriously famous.
The McPike Mansion was built in 1869 by architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger. The original owner of the Mansion was Henry Guest McPike, and the family lived there until 1936.
The house has changed hands several times since its original owner, Henry McPike. Today, it is readily known for its hauntings in paranormal circles. Ghost hunters and haunted ghost tour groups often visit the area’s grounds.
The house has not been occupied since the 1950s. Before weather and vandals damaged the structure extensively, it was a regal addition to the Illinois town of Alton.
The mansion is still thought to house many spirits that once lived there. Many psychics and mediums have felt a ghostly presence of what they believe to be the McPike family, servants, and some of those who resided in and owned the house since 1936.
So, if you’re ready to make your skin crawl, Alton, Illinois, is the creepiest place you should visit. Add it to your next road trip from Chicago soon.
