Chicago has a new James Beard Award-winning restaurant—one with a time-honored reputation that stands apart from the usual fine dining honorees.
Lem’s Bar-B-Q on the South Side has received the coveted 2025 America’s Classics Award, cementing its status as a national culinary institution.
A favorite among locals for more than 70 years, the no-frills barbecue spot is beloved for its legendary rib tips and signature smoky sauce.
Brothers Bruce and Myles Lemons opened the original joint in 1954 in Greater Grand Crossing, later expanding with a second location in Chatham.
Through its seven-decade run, Lem’s has remained a family-run operation dedicated to serving the South Side.
The James Beard Foundation recognized Lem’s not just for its outstanding food but for its contributions to the community.
“Signature flavors, a lasting legacy, and a deep commitment to their community are what make Lem’s Bar-B-Q truly special,” the foundation said in a statement.
“For over seven decades, Lem’s has not only served iconic barbecue but also built a reputation for excellence and service that has stood the test of time.”
