You might be shocked to learn that Illinois has a state sandwich, and that it’s not the classic Chicago Italian Beef.
Well, that could soon change thanks to a new bill!
Bill to make Italian Beef the IL state sandwich advances to House
Illinois leaders have introduced a piece of legislation that could solidify Italian Beef as the official state sandwich of Illinois, according to a first report from ABC7.
The bill is currently on its way to the Illinois House. If approved, Italian Beef would replace the current state sandwich, the Horseshoe.

If you’re a Chicagoan, you likely have no clue what a Horseshoe sammy is.
That’s because it’s a downstate special, originating in the Illinois capital of Springfield.
A Horseshoe consists of a slice of toasted bread, topped with a ham or ground beef patty, cheese, and French fries.
So while the Horseshoe is a beloved Illinois delicacy, Windy City residents know that Italian Beef is the true state sandwich king.
Be sure to check back here soon to see which sandwich will prevail!
