As winter in Chicago drags on, we could all use a reason to celebrate. And this week, we’ll get one!
Tuesday marks the first 5pm sunset in Chicago since November 2024!
Sunsets before 5pm are a hallmark of winter in Chicago, imposing a restrictive time limit on daily activities and leaving us all deprived of some much-needed vitamin D.
From this week forward, Chicago will observe a noticeable increase in sunlight, having already gained nearly 40 minutes of extra daylight since the winter solstice on December 21.
And here’s the best part—the days are only going to get longer from there.
Over the month of February, our average daylight will increase until the clocks spring forward on March 9. After that point, the sun won’t set until nearly 7pm!
While March might still feel far away, the return of 5pm sunsets is a reminder that spring is on the horizon.
Hang in there, Chicago—warmer days and lakeside sunsets are just around the corner!
