Memorial Day Weekend in Chicago means the start of our collective favorite time of year in the Windy City: Beach season!
All city beaches officially open for the 2026 season this weekend.
Here are a few safety tips and things you should know before you hit the lakefront this weekend.
When do Chicago beaches officially open for 2026?

The 2026 Chicago beach season officially begins on Friday, May 22, according to the Chicago Park District.
This means that lifeguards will be on duty each day from 11-7 p.m., with swimming permitted at all beaches.
Beach season 2026 will run through Labor Day on Monday, September 7.
Is beach access free?
Admission to all Chicago beaches is 100% free.
What about parking?

This year, Chicago beachgoers will notice a big change at 10 city beaches—automated parking gates.
The gates are a part of a new effort by the Chicago Park District to enforce parking fees at some of the city’s most popular beaches.
The maximum fee is around $24, with collected revenue supporting the park district.
Safety tips

Staying safe this summer means taking certain precautions when you’re hanging lakeside.
Here are a few safety tips you should know courtesy of the Chicago Emergency Management & Communications department (OEMC):
- Never Swim Alone or at night: Swimming alone or in the dark is extremely dangerous and can end in tragedy. Even when at personal pools and spas, swimming without a buddy is never safe and should not be done.
- Rip Currents: Learn how to escape a rip current: Relax, swim to shore but don’t swim against current; If you can’t escape, float or tread water
- Wear sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids, and have fun!
