Christkindlemarket canceled but 36 vendors will ensure a virtual experience filled with the usual German classics!
There will be no sipping Glühwein in Daley Plaza this winter. The German-inspired annual Christmas market will instead take to the internet where vendors will start selling their products from November 1st. The announcement will be sorry news for many but it comes as no surprise given the current health crisis and the rules banning large Markets are extremely difficult to modify and with so many of the vendors coming from Germany and Europe little can be done but take it digital.
Christkindlemarket is one of Chicago’s biggest tourist attractions during the festive season and usually draws over 1 million visitors each year. Instead, this year revelers will have to order online and hold a boot mug up to the Christkindlmarket that we know and love hoping that next year we’ll be back huddled together sipping spiced wine and eating cheese under the snowflakes.
The virtual experience is attempting to keep the holiday spirit alive and organizers are doing their best to make sure everything is recreated in their unprecedented virtual Christkindlemarkt. Their website reads that products from all around the world will be available in a unique shopping experience that promises “the smell of roasted nuts, fresh pretzels, bratwurst, and hot spiced wine, the sound of music, and the glimmer of sparkling Christmas ornaments.” From November 1st until December 31st people all over the nation will be able to enjoy Christkindlmarket’s “Home for the Holidays.” So if you’ve been before, but didn’t plan on heading back to the Windy City this winter, you’re in luck. 36 different vendors will be ensuring that those great treat are available in the online marketplace, while family-friendly events and fun interactive activities for kids are being put on locally to keep that festive cheer alive.
