With spring arriving in Chicago yesterday it’s likely those of you who frequent social media have already seen numerous glowing orange photos of the city’s ‘Chicagohenge’ phenomenon.
Named after the famous prehistoric boulder formation in Wiltshire, England, the astronomical phenomenon sees the magic of nature and Chicago’s glorious architecture collaborate harmoniously twice a year for the spring and fall equinoxes.
Because Chicago was built on a grid system with streets lining up near perfectly on compass north to south and east to west, the sun lines up directly with Chicago’s east-west facing streets and beams down the heart of the city.
Of all the special events that happen in Chicago throughout the year few vie with the spectacle of the sun beaming perfectly down the artificial valleys of downtown.
While people come from all over to experience it, it’s Chicago’s array of talented photographers who are among the first to have it penned in the diary and every year we’re provided with astounding footage of Chicagohenge peaking.
Though nothing beats experiencing it in person, we have here rounded up a collection our favorite photos and videos for those who weren’t there to experience it at all and those who just simply want to relive it.
