There’s very little chance you’re not by now well aware of the Cicada double brood event that has seen two types of cicadas emerge together.
It is the first time this rare, synchronized event has happened since 1803 and this week billions of cicadas have started appearing across the Chicago area.
While many of us might be reeling in fear as the winged insects invade Chicago, one of Chicagoland’s many brewpubs is making the most of the cicada swarm by offering a new delicacy that fuses one of Chicago’s most iconic drinks with the sound-producing insects.
Noon Whistle Brewing in Lombard is now offering “exclusive locally harvested” Cicada-Infused Malört shots.
According to Noon Whistle Brewing, the cicada-infused shots, which cost $5 each, have a “lobster-like flavor sensation” and are “safe, nutritious, and totally unique”.
“Prepare yourself for a once-in-a-lifetime experience because starting today, we’re thrilled to unveil our exclusive locally harvested Cicada-Infused Malört shots!” reads an announcement on the Lombard Brewpub’s socials earlier this week.
“Believe it or not, the 17-year-old virgin cicadas bring a flavor reminiscent of succulent lobster to this insanely delicious concoction. It’s a taste you won’t find anywhere else, and it’s only available once every 17 years!”
The bar attests that the insects are packed with protein and low in fat making them “a sustainable and eco-friendly food source”. However, they do also warn that you might want to steer clear if you have a shellfish allergy.
After being gathered from a nearby park, they are reportedly cooked and placed inside a bottle of Chicago’s notorious Malört liqueur.
