Anyone who’s gone out drinking in Chicago can tell you that the city has some of the best bars in North America. While some argue we’re biased, we now have concrete evidence to back our claim. North America’s 50 Best Bars 2025 list has just released its ranking from 1 to 50, and it’s no surprise that Chicago’s finest drinkers made the list.
Before we dive into the top-rated bars, let’s discuss the method behind these prestigious rankings. The list is determined by votes from the Academy of Experts, which comprises approximately 300 individuals from the media, bartenders, bar owners, and cocktail connoisseurs. Each member casts seven votes based on their personal best bar experiences from the past 18 months, which form the official annual list.
Chicago’s cocktail scene is well represented with three entries on the list: Kumiko, a West Loop cocktail bar, comes in at number 10; the upscale bar Best Intentions ranks at number 25; the vintage speakeasy Meadowlark in Logan Square is at number 38; and new entry Bisous at number 39, a gem that echos 1960s Paris.
What to know about the best bars in North America
Kumiko
At Kumiko, drinks and food are held in high regard, with a focus on seasonal menus and a refined approach. The establishment boasts a thoughtful selection of shochu and Japanese whisky. This is complemented by a cocktail menu featuring drinks crafted from a blend of Japanese and American ingredients, carefully chosen to reflect the seasonality of the ingredients.
Meadowlark
Meadowlark is one of the most notable cocktail bars to open in Chicago in recent years. Within the speakeasy-like atmosphere, a friendly neighborhood bar vibe oozes. Located in a historic building in Logan Square, it has weathered, exposed brick and a collection of antique decor. It creates an intimate setting where Midwestern hospitality collides with a humble revelry of the region’s flavors, history, and culture.
Best Intentions
Sometimes, the most unassuming neighborhood bars leave a lasting impact on a city’s drinking culture. Best Intentions is a prime example of this phenomenon. This beloved neo-dive has a distinctly Midwestern vibe and is a true gathering place for Logan Square regulars. On any night, Best Intentions is filled with roudy voices of patrons mingling in the warm ambiance.
Bisous
Overseen by bar veteran Peter Vestinos, a local native, this hidden gem in Fulton Market offers a taste of 1960s Paris.
