When it comes to U.S. cities, Chicagoans know our home is a cut above the rest as far as getting around without a car.
Now, a new study has confirmed it—Chicago ranked among the best U.S. cities for living without a car in a survey from online coworking directory CoWorking Cafe.
Here’s a breakdown of the numbers and what they mean for you.
Chicago #9 best city for going car-less

Coworking Cafe analyzed 114 U.S. cities in its study of Best U.S. Cities to Live Without a Car.
The study evaluated cities across a range of metrics including public transit accessibility, bike infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and other factors.
Chicago ranked in the top 10, claiming the number 9 spot and scoring a cumulative 40.7 points.
Chicago outranked other major U.S. cities including Pittsburgh, Portland (OR), and Minneapolis.

Researchers found that 17.7% of Chicagoans regularly use public transportation, marking the 6th-highest percentage of public transit usage out of all 114 cities analyzed.
Chicagoans are big walkers too, the study found, with 5.8% of city dwellers commuting to work on foot.
Additionally, the data shows Chicago possesses a train station density of 1.77 stops per square mile. The Windy City also received high marks for pedestrian and bike-friendliness.
So there you have it, Chicago—whether you’re already commuting by train or thinking of making the switch to a car-free life, you’re in the right place!
