Visitors to Chicago’s famed Buckingham Fountain will notice a new addition this summer—moveable outdoor seating.
The Chicago Park District has installed lightweight chairs around the periphery of the fountain, inspired by global outdoor gathering spaces like the Tulerie Garden in Paris.
The upgrade is part of the broader Grant Park Framework Plan, the Park District’s recently announced 20-year renovation vision for the downtown greenspace.

Additional planned upgrades include expanded public bathrooms, improved lake access, and a new overlook plaza on the south end of the park.
Parkgoers will slowly begin to notice these improvements and more in the coming years.
So next time you visit Buckingham Fountain and enjoy a comfy seat by the water, know that this is just the first of many great renovations to come!
