Grant Park is the backdrop to some of Chicago’s biggest attractions, from events like Lollapalooza and Sueños to public monuments like Buckingham Fountain.
Now, the Chicago Park District has released the Grant Park Framework Plan – Chicago’s Front Yard Reimagined 2026, a 20-year proposal for renovating infrastructure throughout the sprawling green space.
Here’s a look at what’s in the framework and what it means for the future of our city.
Inside the Grant Park Framework Plan

The Grant Park Framework Plan is a multi-dimensional proposal which puts forth a “community-driven vision” for the future of Grant Park, according to the Chicago Park District.
The plan seeks to overhaul the park with comprehensive upgrades geared toward improving accessibility, connectivity, safety, utilities, and other factors.
The Park District has divided the plan into five core areas of focus:
- Preservation & Landscape
- Recreation
- Events
- Mobility
- Safety & Logistics
The Park District intends to execute the plan in phases over the coming two decades.
First upgrades coming summer ’26

The beginnings of the plan are already underway, and Chicagoans will notice improvements to the park as soon as this summer.
The first major project associated with the plan includes installing movable seating around the Buckingham Fountain plaza.
Through this accessibility upgrade, the Park District aims to foster leisure and social gathering, emulating global models like the Tuileries Garden in Paris.
Long-term goals

The plan also outlines ambitious long-term goals for Grant Park, including the construction of the “People’s Plaza Overlook.”
Planned for the area between Columbus Drive and Roosevelt Road, the space will reportedly host rotating art and cultural exhibitions.
Additional upgrades could include expanded public bathrooms, new walkways, and improved lake access between Buckingham Fountain and the lakefront trail.
Local officials chime in

Local leaders have voiced their excitement and approval for the framework.
Chicago Park District CEO and Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa applauded the plan, stating “Grant Park is the crown jewel of Chicago’s world-class park system.”
“As the stewards of this historic gem, we must ensure we have a thoughtful plan that prioritizes restoration and development for future generations, just as our forefathers did for us.”
