After enduring more than 30 roof leaks and subsequent mold damage, Bucket O’ Blood Books and Records will close its current Avondale storefront at the end of November. The independent shop, a fixture on Elston Avenue for 11 years, opted not to renew its lease to escape the ongoing maintenance struggles.
Stocking horror, punk, and physical media
A beloved haven for collectors of the weird, wonderful, and wonderfully obscure is preparing to leave its longtime home—but this isn’t goodbye.
Known for its meticulously curated mix of vinyl, books, movies, and analog treasures, the shop has long rewarded visitors willing to dig through its shelves. Expect classic horror paperbacks, deep-cut punk records, science-fiction favorites, cassette tapes, and walls covered with iconic music memorabilia—including posters from the Misfits and Dead Kennedys.
Its selection is especially irresistible for cult-film devotees and genre lovers. Shoppers may stumble across a comprehensive Twin Peaks box set, beloved cult movies such as Jennifer’s Body and Midsommar, or local finds like the Godzilla in Chicago comic collection. In other words: It’s the sort of place where an ordinary browsing trip can turn into a full-blown treasure hunt.
Bucket O’ Blood Books and Records is searching for a new space
The store will close its current location at 3182 N Elston Ave in November, though the closure is only temporary. The owners are actively looking for a new retail space and plan to reopen elsewhere once they find the right fit.
Until then, customers can keep stopping in throughout the fall. New arrivals and fresh inventory will continue hitting the shelves right up until the move, giving Chicagoans plenty of time to browse, discover, and stock up on physical media before the transition begins.
