If you’re over 60 in Chicago and looking for a community meal where you can chat with new people, want to improve your tech skills to stay connected with Gen Z, or just want to begin a new hobby such as yoga or glass art, we’re happy to say that there are places where you can do all these things—and for almost no cost.
Chicagoans aged 60 and older can receive a free Chicago Department for Senior Services (CDFSS) Participation Card, which lets them access local programs at a significant discount.
What the CDFSS card gets you
- Community meals: Golden Diners serves hot lunches on weekdays at sites across Chicago for those 60 and older, with a suggested $4.55 donation.
- Classes and activities: Regional senior centers offer fitness facilities, computer learning, workshops, and social events. Most programs are free or available for a minimal charge; offerings vary by center.
- Help with other needs: Regional centers also offer information and assistance, and the city lists free one-on-one health insurance counseling through SHIP at its regional centers.
Who can get one?
The free photo card is available to Chicago residents aged 60 and older. However, this is not available to non-residents.
How to sign up
Eligible Seniors can get their participation card at the following locations:
- Northeast Levy Regional Center – 2019 W. Lawrence
- Northwest Copernicus Regional Center – 3160 N. Milwaukee
- Central West Regional Center – 2102 W. Ogden
- Southeast Atlas Regional Center – 1767 E. 79th St.
