If you’re an avid TikTok scroller and book reader, you’ve likely come across BookTok. BookTok is a niche part of the social media platform where readers recommend, review, and discuss their favorite books, and it has helped many reach the #1 best-selling shelf.
And it goes without saying, Hollywood producers have taken notice, as some of TikTok’s most viral books have been adapted into popular TV shows this past year (yes, we’re on our fourth rewatch of “Off Campus”).
Now, BookTok is making waves a little closer to home.
Better Than the Movies—the New York Times bestselling novel by Illinois native Lynn Painter—became a viral BookTok favorite. And it’s officially getting the Netflix treatment, with filming spotted just outside Chicago.
The upcoming rom-com was seen shooting in St. Charles last week. The film, directed by Julia Hart, will feature Town House Books and Cafe, located at 105 N. 2nd Ave. in St. Charles.
Who’s in the Better Than the Movies cast?
Beatrice Kitsos (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and David Iacono (Jurassic World Rebirth) have landed the lead roles. Deacon Phillippe, son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, is expected in a supporting role.
Here is the whole cast:

- Luke Kirby as Brian Buxbaum
- Judy Greer as Helena

It is expected to be released on Netflix next year.
