This stunning wisteria tree has wandered straight out of a fairytale.
Japan knows how to do spring. I mean, first they had adorable deer lounging under canopies of cherry blossoms, and now we’ve happened upon this incredible wisteria tree, which takes #WisteriaHysteria to the max.
Rooted in the heart of the Ashikaga Flower Park, about a 75-minute drive north of Tokyo, the incredible wisteria tree is immensely popular with the public. And it’s not hard to see why, as the floral park is a veritable Garden of Eden in which a dreamy wander is virtually guaranteed. In spring, the wisteria is adorned with long scented clusters in a thousand shades of blue, white, pink or purple, enough to make it arguably the most beautiful wisteria tree in the world.
Faced with this cascade of majestic flowers, it is impossible to remain unmoved. But this century-old tree hasn’t had the easiest life, as it began to waste away in its original spot. Thankfully, some twenty years ago, nature-loving rescuers moved the tree to the floral park on the outskirts of the city of Tochigi, so that it could flourish and reveal the full splendor of its blossoms.
Now around 150 years old, the magical tree – a variety of Wisteria floribunda nicknamed ‘Domino’ – stretches across more than 600 metres of trellis installed to support the weight of its branches and blooms. Come nightfall, bespoke lighting illuminates the tree perfectly, and makes the spectacle all the more awe-inspiring. Though a trip to Japan to stand beneath the canopy of flowers is out of the question right now, this lovely little video should give you a taste of what it’s like to see the wisteria tree in all its glory.
