For one night only, the internationally acclaimed Grammy-nominated vocalist, whistler, and songwriter is returning to his hometown for back-to-back exclusive concerts at the Green Mill. Andrew Bird has been long appreciated by Chicago fans, recently performing at Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church for a week over the holidays, and now he’s set to play at the treasured jazz spot.
A Chicago native, Andrew Bird graduated from Lake Forest High School and Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in violin performance. That same year, he self-released his first solo album, Music of Hair. Since then, he has released 16 studio albums and several live albums and EPs, spanning various genres, including swing music, indie rock, and folk music. While he usually takes the big stage, The Green Mill is beloved by Andrew Bird—he used to frequent the live music spot while he was in college.
Now, he’s returning to perform back-to-back concerts in a single night at the Green Mill. However, fans will be unable to purchase tickets. Instead, it will be lottery-based, and fans can register for the imitate shows until April 13 at 5 pm.
The historic Green Mill has hosted some of Chicago’s best Jazz performers for over a century. During Prohibition, the lounge was a notorious speakeasy run by Jack McGurn, a known associate of Al Capone. Today, the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge plays jazz all night, seven nights a week. Walking into the Green Mill is like stepping back to the 1920s—rhythmic jazz and blues reverberate throughout the establishment.
The concert will take place on May 29, 2024, with shows at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. You can learn more about the exclusive concert here.
