If you’re looking to plan a weekend escape this autumn but feel overwhelmed by too many choices, consider consolidating all your bucket-list cities into one trip.
Is that even possible? Actually, yes! There’s no better way to experience it than aboard Amtrak’s Empire Builder, recently named one of the most scenic train journeys in the US by The Independent and its US Travel Editor Ted Thornhill.
The Empire Builder stretches 1,138miles from Chicago to Portland/Seattle, encompassing a 46-hour journey that takes travelers from the mesmerizing Mississippi River to the picturesque Columbia River Gorge.
Along the way, you’ll cross a 19th-century bridge, pass through national parks, and enjoy stunning scenery!
Amtrak’s Empire Builder is named for its route, following that of early pioneers, as it rolls through some of America’s most magnificent landscapes.

Stop-by-Stop highlights of the Amtrak’s Empire Builder
Chicago, IL (Start) – Your adventure begins in Chicago’s Union Station. Before you step on the train, stop at Swadesi, known for its chai latte and savory pastries that blend Indian roots with French pastry techniques.
