As thunderstorms and tornadoes threaten the area, Chicago can expect destructive winds up to 75 miles per hour, along with potentially damaging hail. So far, 100+ combined flights have been canceled at O’Hare and Midway as the storm is expected to bring strong winds and hail.
Currently, a Tornado Watch has been put into effect until 10 p.m. for the following counties:
- Boone
- Cook
- De Kalb
- DuPage
- Ford
- Grundy
- Iroquois
- Kane
- Kankakee
- Kendall
- Lake
- LaSalle
- Lee
- Livingston
- McHenry
- Ogle
- Will
- Winnebago
Right now, areas in the western and southern suburbs are under a moderate risk for severe weather, with the threat level residing fourth on an out of five scales.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch and as the fast-moving storms approach, the warnings which have been mainly in the west could extend to the east.
For now, as the exact location of a storm system is still uncertain, large portions of Illinois and Indiana are under watch but could elevate to a warning over time.
We’ll keep you updated if anything changes.
