The world’s first-ever Michelin-starred taco joint is making its way to Chicago this November for an exclusive pop-up, and taco enthusiasts won’t want to miss it.
Family-owned taqueria Califa De León opened its doors in Mexico City in 1968, and has drawn international acclaim over the years for its exceptional yet stripped down taco formula.
Described as a “bare bones” operation by Michelin, El Califa de León offers only four menu items. Perhaps their best-selling item is the signature Gaonera taco which features a simple beef filet seasoned with only salt and lime. Other options include pork, beef rib, and beef steak.
El Califa de León takes a purist approach to their tacos, favoring quality, homemade ingredients over excessive toppings and garnishes. In addition to their expertly prepared meats, El Califa makes their own corn tortillas and salsas.
El Califa de Leon has partnered with local Mexican restaurant Tacombi to bring its tacos to Chicago. For two weeks, diners can head to Tacombi’s Wicker Park and Fulton Market locations to try El Califa’s offerings.
On Wednesday, November 13, El Califa de León will host a special event at Tacombi Wicker Park where guests can sample the full menu. From November 14-28, a smaller selection of tacos will be available at both Tacombi locations.
