Two things can be true: the beloved comedy classic “Groundhog Day” and the actor Bill Murray have both stood the test of time. In fact, they may even be getting better with age!
If you have seen the 1993 film, you might be aware that it takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home to the famous groundhog named Phil.
However, Groundhog Day wasn’t actually filmed in Pennsylvania; it was entirely shot in the beloved, quaint small town of Woodstock, Illinois.
While you can stroll the various filming locations and reminisce about the movie, Woodstock is also a wonderful place to visit this fall.
‘Groundhog Day’ Was Completely Filmed Here
We will start with Main Street, which runs through the Historic Square of Woodstock, an area bordered by Main, Benton, Cass, and Van Buren Streets.
The buildings around the Square, many brick Victorian facades, reflect Woodstock’s founding in 1844 and its role as the county seat in the 1850s.

The highlight of this area is the Classic Cinemas Woodstock Theatre, a restored 1927 theater, making it a central part of Main Street’s entertainment. Another notable feature is the Woodstock Mural, located next to the cinema. This emotional, wall-sized artwork celebrates Orson Welles, Dick Tracy, and local arts history.
On the west side of the Square, along Main Street, stands the Old McHenry County Courthouse, established in 1857 in the Italianate style. It has since been renovated and transformed into the Old Courthouse Center, which features a brewery, several restaurants, and locally-owned retail shops.
Yet, there’s more than just wandering in Woodstock; a beloved Halloween festival is taking place this fall.
Woodstock Is Hosting A Magical Witches & Wizards Festival
This weekend, the Woodstock Square will be transformed into a realm of enchantment for the Witches & Wizards of Woodstock.
