Chicago’s winter parking ban is officially coming to an end on April 1st.
The overnight parking ban often catches many Chicago drivers off guard each year, as it applies regardless of whether there is snow on the ground.
There is still a little over a week left, so if you’re unsure, look for any signs with blue snowflakes on them, and avoid parking near those signs.
Why is there an overnight parking ban in Chicago?
The city’s Winter Overnight Parking Ban helps ensure public safety during the winter by allowing emergency vehicles and public transportation to move freely, thereby reducing hazardous conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and other travelers.

The 3 AM parking rule is finally ending for the season
The overnight parking ban impacts 107 miles of the city’s busiest streets, which are essential for keeping traffic flowing during winter.
From December to April, parking your car overnight on these streets between 3 AM and 7 AM will result in your vehicle being towed and substantial fines. If you violate this ban, you can expect to pay a $150 towing fee, a $60 ticket, and a $25 daily storage fee for each day your car remains at the impound lot. This could total $235 for a single mistake.
Starting next month, you can breathe a sigh of relief, well, that is, until December 1st.
